WHERE: the bottom of the Sea Cliff steps, at Sea Cliff Beach in Sea Cliff. Not at the gym.
20:01 AMRAP — Stair Climb
Rx: weighted vest, 20/14
Scaled: bodyweight
Beginner: walk down the hill instead of the steps
83 steps each way. UP AND DOWN IS ONE ROUND. Every step after your last complete round is a rep.
We have done this every year on 9/11 since 2016. My brother wrote it back when we were training in the garage. The clock reads 20:01 for a reason, and that is the whole explanation.
Stimulus: Target 8 to 14 rounds, and that range is not a guess. It is what this gym has actually done across ten years and 34 logged scores. The all-time best is 14 rounds and 93 reps, Rx, in 2024.
This is a benchmark now. It is on the boards with Fran and Helen and Murph, your whole history is already there, and everything you have ever scored on it is loaded. Rx and scaled are ranked separately, so a year you wore the vest is never compared against a year you did not.
How to pace it: the first three rounds will feel easy and they are a trap. Whatever pace you take up the steps in round one is a pace you have to hold nineteen more minutes. Walk if you need to walk. Nobody has ever regretted starting this one slow.
If the weather is bad we run it at the gym instead: 20:01 AMRAP of 20 inch box step-ups, same vest. That is what we did in 2023. It goes on the board as its own thing and is never ranked against the steps, because it is not the same workout.
SCORE: rounds + reps. One round is up AND down, 166 steps. Anything past your last complete round goes in the reps box as steps. Put your vest weight in the notes.
